KNASHING OF TEETH. (15/02/13)

It has been a dry and mild day…..I was going to take Bertha and a poncho down to the estuary. I had an e-mail just after breakfast letting me know a halogen cooker was due to be delivered. We were out at dawn and the weather, though warm, was little different to the rest of the week.

_V0G4950_edited-1         You will be getting heartily sick of these images.

A friend of mine, Bob, and a friend of the dogs, Purdey left for Coniston this morning. We took the dogs for one last run on the salt marsh. I’ll have to start watching for breeding birds and keep them on a lead.

Alf and Purdey………Moll is twice their age so isn’t included in their games. She is quite happy diving in and giving one or the other a quick nip to keep them on the boil.

I did get Bertha out for the Tree Creeper…….missed it with the big lens. Got it with a 138mm lens on the other camera……..Couple of Cameras Colin am I.

_V0G4959_edited-1                It never stops moving. There can’t be any insects it must be pupae or larvae it is eating….it doesn’t like peanuts!

Between feeling hard done by, doing laundry and Polishing the van I kept an eye on the feeders. It is good here, what have I to moan about? They have stripped the axles and the bits from Germany are going to be six weeks. I now wish that I’d stripped them myself and got Tempered Spring in Sheffield to knock me up a dozen torsion bars. No wonder the EEC is in trouble.

The feeders.

_V0G4967_edited-1    Goldfinch and Blue Tit.

_V0G4970_edited-1                                 An anti-social Goldfinch

_V0G4974_edited-1       And the opposite a Long tailed Tit.  A very gentle but noisy bird.

_V0G4977_edited-1       A couple of Long Tailed Tits sharing with a Great Tit.

_V0G4990_edited-1          I think this is a female Chaffinch………….Help.

_V0G5008_edited-1            This is something else.

_V0G4997_edited-1             These are Greenfinches and a Blue Tit.

I’m hopeless with dull coloured birds. Let me know if I have made a little error or three. Even Robins have trouble. The one here was nasty to his mate and is singing his heart out twenty four seven to get her back. I have yet to snap a Siskin or the Red Poll…..the bird not the cow…even I know not to mistake these. The latter has a cloven hoof….four to be precise.

Have a great weekend.

  2. ID's first; female Chaffinch, correct; and a Siskin.

That was a great catch of the flying Goldfinch Adrian, and a good one of the Treecreeper.

Halogen cooker ..... great bit of kit. That's what I got when my cooker decided to be a pain, and not switch itself off.

    1. Keith, Thanks for the Siskin...I can only be sure when they arrive mob handed.
The cooker seems a good buy.

  3. I think the 'something else' is a siskin - not sure whether male or female. Your bird pictures are beautifully clear.

  6. The creeper blends in extremely well with the tree bark. What they find mostly are eggs. They have a little better eyesight than us. You had a busy day watching feeders and were rewarded with some interesting birds.

    1. Red, it must be eating something it has been around for a week on and off.

  7. You are getting a good collection of feathered visitors - saves all that trudging and lugging. Great shot of the diving Goldfinch.

    1. It is good here John. There are Red Polls GSWs and Field fare. That's just round the van.

  8. Some crackers there Adrian. I find that most of my more unusual bird photos are luck in that I take a hundred of them flying on and off the feeders or wherever and one may turn up trumps and 99 go into trash.

  9. This is a good place for the feeders.....I'll have to add up the different birds visiting. I can waste hours watching them.
