THE WORLD'S WORST PHOTOGRAPH (31/10/09)

image

image   We are staying between Brixham and Dartmouth, the main object of this visit is to catch up with old friends, by happy chance it also happens to be a wonderful part of our country.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA   THE WATERFRONT DARTMOUTH.....A smashing hotchpotch of architecture.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA   This building always makes me smile. How much truth there is in the story I'm not sure. It's said that this railway station was built in advance of the rail link to Dartmouth. Unfortunately they built it on the wrong side of the river. Even the Victorians got it wrong sometimes, spectacularly so in this case.

Yesterday we took the ferry up the river Dart to Totnes, a lovely scenic trip if a rather cool and grey day.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA   The top ferry.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERACORMORANT...Dozens of these.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThis tree has been half killed by Cormorants using it as a perch to dry out, the salt effectively defoliating it.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA  Common Terns, and Black Headed Gulls, all chasing the wash from the ferry and the small fish it disturbs.

And now I just have to post the worst photograph I think I've ever taken and I can assure you there is serious competition for this accolade.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA KINGFISHER

I knew I had no chance but they are such rare and illusive birds I had to give it a try. Wide angle lens, low ISO and the little beast in total shade made for this disaster. Still, said it was a goal to photograph one and I have!!! The same one twice in fact, a double whammy I believe is the expression.

  1. Yep. A double whammy. You got it. That is clever to get it two times. I got a bird I can't identify but everyone thinks it is a dark eyed Junco. So I sent it off to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology for their opinion. The white collar is really confusing to me.

  3. Adrian, an outstanding set of pictures, from a beautiful part of the country. Excellent.

As I scrolled down, and came to the last one, I recognised it immediatley. Much like all the shots I have of Kingfishers lol

  4. Thanks all, yes a grand place. Hopefully I'll beg borrow or steal a RIB. I know where the Kingfisher lives and they are very territorial so will have another go.

  5. Great shots of a beautiful part of Devon. You are not on your own with bad Kingfisher shots...I suspect a lot of us have them . I know I do.

  6. What beautiful photos. And what a beautiful place. And this will probably be the only time I will ever be able to say this to you - I have lots of bird photos just like that last one of yours!!

  8. I will agree the last shot isn't all that great, but the others more than make up for that.

  9. You managed a better photo of the Kingfisher than I did the once one visited my pond. I ended up with a birdless shot! ;)
