HARDLY AMUSED. (27/1014)

Today has been vile, that misty rain that doesn’t sound like rain or look like rain but five seconds out in it and one is wringing wet. Tomorrow they are promising proper rain and wind which is a pity as I have to nip up to Kinross.

To cap it all I had to walk the five hundred miles…….I meant yards but if the Proclaimers can Pretenders to walk five hundred miles then I’m sure I should be able to……..Me and my big mouth; all for posh toffees, I did get some dead sheep at the butchers for supper. I have also stripped down my electric window on the van. I was having breakfast when water started dripping in so I assumed the window wasn’t closed. I pressed the button and lowered it a bit and pressed the rocker switch again and nothing happened. What a job. Two and a half hours later I got it all back together and working and the window is shut. To annoy me further the window was shut but the door wasn’t. Check the obvious first is the moral of this story.

The rest of the day has been spent cooking and playing with the USB microscope. I am thinking of focus stacking images from it but the stand it comes with is not really up to the job. It needs attaching to a macro slider so I started designing a holder which would attach to a quick release plate and then to the slider. I thought messing with particles and arty farty was hard in Blender 3D but designing something for 3D printing is equally challenging. When I’ve done it I’ll send it to someone I know at Penistone Railway Works for a quick once over and a print. I don’t know whether they can print internal screw threads, can’t see why not but if not I’ll design over size holes fill them with araldite pop the screw in and when it’s all cured I’ll use a soldering iron to heat the screw and I should have a reasonable threaded insert. Come to think I can buy thread inserts, I can buy them in lot’s of threads and with loads of different outside diameters and forms but I bet I can’t buy one.

As it is Adrian’s Images you have to have a picture.

20141027164541    I really enjoy looking down the microscope. This is a picture of spores at the bottom of a gill in a Hay Cap toadstool. It is at 500X and heavily cropped. It reminds me of fish eggs being fertilized. I have to include a picture even if it is a silly one. To section this I used an old fashioned safety razor blade. My kitchen Knife, despite much honing was not up to the job. I do look through a 4” magnifying glass I purchased in Lidl for under a pound. That, steady hands and clean living is almost as good as a microtome.

Have fun.

    1. Mersad, not bad for £70.00p delivered. It is hard finding subjects. The DOF is measured in microns.
This wouldn't print a pity as they do look good to me.

  3. All water tight once again then Adrian, at least it kept you out of mischief for a couple of hours?

I don't know what size thread you want in your holder but would it work if you got them to print a hex shaped hole that you could glue a nut into...or maybe print the hex hole just under size and press the nut in? If it's a metric thread you're after I might (???) just be able to supply a nut or two...[;o)

    2. Trevor, what a bugger of a job it was. It is one of those old crank winders and it had gone over centre. There is a wee screw to sort them. I sorted it. Gave it a good squirt of dry Lube and the window goes up and down quicker than a tart on a pogo stick.

Its just the standard one in a camera or plate. I'll have to check looks like 3/8" UNC but happen it is a weird one to cameras. I have boxes of thread inserts from my biking and car destroying days.
Never thought of just bonding a nut in. Great and thanks post me a nut that fits the screw in your quick release plate.

    3. PS I am really looking forward to "Sunstroke Is a Danger, for middle England". It's trench foot weather up here. It is awful warm here. Just back from a trickle which is Scottish for shower.

    1. Margaret, the best of it is it could be made into a movie. The little devils keep emitting when watched in real time.
Bangor is damp and Sligo is really wet.

  5. I' impressed that you can take a window lifter apart and fix it when it's not broken. I've tried to fix a few unbroken things too.

    1. Red, it was broken but until I sent the window down and it failed to go back up I didn't know it was.

  9. You should be able to print a screw thread but I wouldn't know how well it would last. I think some people print the hole slightly undersized and then use the screw to self-tap the hole. Having said that Trevor's idea of a hex shaped hole is probably the most sensible (use a 6 sided cylinder in blender). I'll send you a blend file showing an example of how I model things for 3D printing if that helps and I'll happily look a model over for you.

I once went with my son, who was four, and my wife to the solicitors. We walked in and the receptionist said you are twenty minutes late and Mr Cockerton is very busy. My son chirped up and said. It's mums fault she couldn't get her fucking arse in gear. I was ready and dad was ready.

    1. Laura, it is wonderful what nature has to offer. I wish I could get much higher resolution images for print. It is just luck. this little mushroom was busy emitting spores. I should have taken a picture as it sends them out in a perfect square and always four at a time.
