HOW MANY SPOTS? (06/04/15)

_V0G7899    Millipedes have four legs per segment and Centipedes have two this is not a four spot ladybird but a seven spot one as three spots are hidden from view. What I have never realised is that they can retract their heads like a tortoise. They only have one head, though this one has two as it is sitting on a mirror.

_V0G7902        Here it is again with it’s head and legs extended as it wanders along.

I went out looking for a beetle but found a Centipede. I hope it is Lithobius forficatus. I got this from reading Phil’s blog. He did it proud as he managed to capture a whole one. CENTIPEDE ON WHITE. It looks much better but then Phil is a proper naturalist.

_V0G7905    I prefer these to Millipedes as they seem more interesting. When I first pop them down I have to wait to see which direction they head off as they look very similar front and back. This is the head end.

I think I have about exhausted this mirror business so unless I find something new and exciting I’ll leave it alone for a while.

I hope you all enjoyed Easter. It has been baking hot here with hardly a cloud in the sky.

    1. R.Mac, they remind me of Dr. Doolittle's Push-me-Pull-you. I'll try and get a picture with all of one in.

  3. Fascinating pictures as usual. Lovely summery East Monday in Sheffield too. Shirt sleeves weather as if winter just went away for good. As if!

  5. I love the dimples on the black section of head on the ladybird. Have you considered putting the mirror within a box to prevent dust etc?

    1. Douglas, some is dust and some is faults in the mirror surface as the mirrors are rejects. I have the mirror surrounded on three sides to cut down reflections. I will try some anti-static spray.

  7. Baking hot sounds like it would be welcome, but if the humidity is high then it would be uncomfortable.Your study using the mirror has given us a very different look at the critters.

  8. I'm pleased someone had decent Easter weather. Cold, cloudy and sometimes misty here. Didn't start warming up until tea time yesterday.

  9. Now that I've seen that sinister face, I'll never feel quite the same about ladybirds. Sigh.

    1. Frances it has a nice moustache. Ladybirds can give a nasty nip if annoyed.
