MIXED FORTUNES (10/07/11)

A funny old day………..no rain but windy with ever the threat of a downpour. The sparrows are eating me out of house and home and have now been joined by a family of Great tits and another of Blue Tits. The peanuts survive but they are getting through two feeders of seed and two to three fat balls a day.OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA These two siblings can fly but spend most of their time under the feeder shouting for food. Endearing for about twenty minutes.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA This little fly is no bigger than a grass seed…………..I really will have to get a better book on insects. The tiny ones are just as beautiful as the larger ones.  It’s a bit windy for Macro today but this is just about identifiable.

Just after this I sat on a wasp…………it wasn’t best pleased. No problem identifying it though. A pain in the bum it was and still is truth be told.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA  This could well be the same or a similar insect……..it flew away and I think it is a fly and not a beetle.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA  This is Meadow Cranes Bill with some even more diminutive flies. I have no idea whether they are sunbathing or dinning. I think these are what we used to call Thunder Flies. I once knew a girl with a similar sobriquet.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA These are Hoverflies. There were lots of the small thin ones but they were too quick for me.

I’m going to have to set up a miniature studio and bribe the little blighters with honey to stop still. They are amazingly complex wee things even if they are uncooperative. That and the breeze made for a challenging but enjoyable hour or so.

Have a good week.

  1. These macros are excellent Adrian, but I have to say the two little sparrows just ooze 'cuteness'.

  5. Looks like you're fattening the sparrows right up. I love the detail not only on the insects but the flowers--good marcro work!

  6. Keith, I must have twenty or thirty sparrows. These two are little gems. Noisy little gems. I enjoy watching insects. Yesterday had it's downside but then I wasn't watching the wasp.

Norma, even the black ones aren't all black. They are such delicate things.

Bob, the hoverflies were a challenge yesterday. Thanks.

Dee Bee, I can see room for improvement but it is good fun watching them.

JoLynne, I find Macro a real challenge. I also find tying shoe laces a challenge!!

  8. John, it was a bit too windy. I can see ring flash coming for Christmas.

  9. The insect is neither a beetle nor a fly. It is a bug. Not as in the Americanism but a true bug of the order Heteroptera sub-order Hemiptera. It is probably a Damsel Bug (family Nabidae).

  10. George, an expert at last. Many, many thanks. A beautiful wee bug. I love little insects but it takes an expert to put a name to them. Thank you again.

  12. Jay, I really enjoy the bird feeder. Better than TV. I don't mind the common ones fortunately. House Sparrows seem to be making a comeback.
