PAVEMENTS ONE (23/07/11)

We are just in from a three hour wander around the limestone pavement under Ingleborough. The weather is magnificent. This is the first time I’ve been here in summer and it really is wonderful. I should really have climbed Ingleborough but hadn’t packed a proper bag so discretion and a little touch of idleness dissuaded me. I have so many pictures to show you that I’m going to do this post in two halves…………..That’s why I have called this Pavements One.

All the following are panoramas and compressed to two thousand pixels wide so will enlarge with a click.OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA  The view looking west over Chapel Le Dale. The semi plateau on the left is our destination.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA   A similar view but including Ingleborough.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA  Looking east with Great Whernside on the left.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA   Another view of Whernside with the limestone pavement in the foreground.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA   Another view of the Pavement.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA      Finally another, the little pimple on the horizon is our destination. This is not a wander for the faint of heart. The pavement is anything but and horrendous to walk on. The bog and grass on it’s periphery is little better. For variety I alternate betwixt pavement and bog.

It’s now time to fire up the barbeque…………..It is a wonderful day……….last time I was here I strolled up Whernside and got caught in a sleet storm of such malevolence that my face and head were bleeding. Extreme exfoliation.

All the very best and enjoy whatever you are up to.

  1. What a beautiful looking place Adrian. Looks remote and wild. I like that. A bugger if you run out of booze n' fags though, I should think.

  2. It is wonderful.........I usually visit a couple of times in winter. It's damn cold then. No danger of running out of booze I'm parked in a pub car park.

  4. Almost as remote as the Hebrides! Colder in winter though. There is a splendid beauty in the remoteness I must say. And thanks for the wishes. I'm sitting here at midnight reading your blog. How much more enjoyable can life get?

  6. Last time I was here, I climbed Ingleborough and didn't give myself enough time to give this place the justice it deserved. It seemed a long walk from where I parked at Chapel le dale for that time of day. Your treatment of this has made a bit more barren and remote than I expected to see. Art indeed.

  7. Jay, It is barren......I am still not happy with the pavement shots. I get down low to emphasize the distance but it doesn't really do the pavement justice. I tend to shoot at f16 manual focus about a third of the way into the shot. I'm thinking of focus stacking three or four images for sharp front to back.
